Free things you can do to protect your Data!

We all know the value of our data. From our company information accessed at the office, to our home computers, data is constantly under attack from accidental corruption or deletion to attacks from hackers and viruses.

How would you feel if your entire history of family photos was suddenly gone because of a hard drive or thumb drive failure. Believe me, we get the calls for data recovery every day.

But there are some steps to keep your data safe and here’s a quick tip.

Easy Data Protection Tip One

This seems pretty obvious, but securing your data with a good password can substantially reduce hackers ability to access it.

Just think of all the data you use daily like the very device you’re using. Your computer, phone, tablet and so on, all should have secure passwords.

Not just for people that may have physical access to them, but for the online threats that we face daily.

So what makes up a good password?

– don’t use the name of your significant other, your children, your pets and so on. These are the easiest for hackers to guess at.

– don’t use the word “password” or “blank”

– Do use a mixture of upper and lower case characters. Passwords are case sensitive so “MyPaSSword” is different from “mypassword” in the eyes of the computer.

– add in some numerals to make it even more secure. Pick a couple of numbers from the month or year of a special event. Avoid birthdays and so on. Perhaps something like the model year of your first car. So “MyPaSSword89” becomes even more secure.

– sprinkle in some special characters like ! & * etc. So again “My*PaSSword!89” becomes very very secure.

– think of a phrase to help you remember it. so “My*PaSSword!89” could be “My star password bang(!) 89

These are all pretty obvious but you’d be surprised how many people just don’t think to put a hard password in place.

I hope this helps, and remember that if you’re ever in need of data backups in the cloud or data recovery, just give me a call at 705-988-5755.
